A recent interview I did for The Kernel Magazine!

Milo Yiannopoulos ( EDITOR The Kernel) catches up with the reality television star translating her on-screen fame into a powerful marketing vehicle for her online retailer.

Unlike most young people propelled to fame by reality television, Amber Atherton has an impressive CV that predates her appearance on our screens. In her case, it predates it by over a decade: Atherton first caught the entrepreneurial bug at the age of nine, selling CDs and books online. “I got my first cheque, for a No Doubt CD, a few days before my tenth birthday,” she recalls.

Now the entrepreneur and society damsel, who was described by the Daily Mail as “The it-girl who doesn’t rely on Daddy,” is hoping to make connections in the technology industry to help her critically lauded online jewellery retailer, MYFLASHTRASH, which she founded at boarding school. She’s been a model, a student and a regular on the London party circuit, but now she’s settling into life as a fully-fledged entrepreneur.

I caught up with Atherton earlier this month at the opening of the new Pace gallery in London, which has taken over the space left on Burlington Gardens by Haunch of Venison’s departure. She’s enthusiastic about…….  (more…)

BetaBrand.xxx

“As an Internet brand you need to contribute artistically to the weirdness that is the web. We will stop at which point it becomes completely idiotic.”

-Chris Lindland, BetaBrand Founder

So BetaBrand launched a brand hackathon and here’s what happened…

The microsite dubbed Betabrand.xxx is a playful take on what happens when you accidentally click on a porn site and get bombarded with flashy pop-up videos and chat boxes inviting you to call or click for live-action fun with a hot babe or dude.

In its inimitably cheeky style, Betabrand’s take includes a Facebook chat from the company’s first offering the Cordarounds, which delivers a series of hilarious double entendres, while the video for Hot Socks comes complete with a porn-worthy audio track to accompany “sexy” images of insertion–foot into sock, that is.

Great example of a brand getting cheeky with e-commerce and standing out from mundane retail sites. What do you think of the result of Beta Brands Hackathon?

Earlier this year Gianluca Longo introduced me to Aperol, an Italian Aperitif which was consumed in vast quantites in the afternoons at a fashion conference in Trieste. Then a month ago in Sardinia someone brought Martini Bianco onto our boat and made a cocktail which until this day I will remember as the most refreshingly, delicious cocktail EVER.
