Its 3am UK time and I’m in a jetlagged daze after arriving back from glorious Mexico this morning! AKA my new favourite place on earth!! Brimming with colour and culture this place has got it all beautiful beaches, high speed internet, ancient ruins, delicious food and the most covetable crafts.
Check out Grazia! Online next week for my full holiday wardrobe but for now here’s a quick low down of my adventures…
With one week in the south of Mexico I wanted to pack in as much as possible so we stayed in 4 different hotels starting with
La Tortuga- Playa Del Carmen: Nestled in a tropical enclave just back from the beach this gorgeous boutique hotel is centered around a lagoon like pool. Owned by Italians, its a chic little hide out that feels a million miles away from the vegas strip vibe of nearby 5th avenue. The Sheffield bred manager Joanna is the biggest sweetheart and made us feel instantly at home. Charming service and minimally luxurious rooms this hotel has won many awards and is definitely worth a visit. And so is………
……Papaya Playa Project Tulum: Part of the achingly hip Design Hotel Group this extended ‘pop up hotel’ project is a magnet for arty creatives and hedonistic hippies. With eccentric furnishings, a raw food cafe and a grandma chic outside living room, its freshly squeezed coolness. So if you want a cast-a-way style escape then this is your bet but be warned this place is not for the faint-hearted hipster. If you’re expecting 5* service, air conditioning a door to the loo and reliable electricity and hot water then you might want to back away now, retaining an aloof demanour and escape to………..
………Vallodolid a quaint colonial spanish town centered around a church. Come on a Sunday and you’ll enjoy one of the free Sunday concerts, street stalls and dancing. Visit the Coqui Coqui perfumery & drink frozen margeritas on the roof at dusk at the central hotel. Pick up one of the local embroidered tops or panama hats as you’ll need one by the pool at……
Le Blanc Cancun: a gigantic 260 room hotel built to deluxly- dizzying proportions. If you want to go to a fabulous spa and stay in the most luxuriously all inclusive hotel known to man kind then go here. THE most attentive staff highlights included the open mini bar, unbelievably comfy bed, and free room service and our courteous butler Louis. This is the only place to stay if you somehow end up in Cancun. ( Read warning below)
Where to go:Acumel was my favourite place!! A pleasant sea side town where we swam with turtles and chilled on the most devastaingly beautiful beach. Vallodolid is definitely worth a visit too if only to check out the Coqui Coqui perfumery. If you’re a yoga bunny head to Tulum which is the fashion crowd’s haven. Track down the roadside 2 for 1 lobsters deal and your set for the afternoon!
Where to avoid: Cancun is what I imagine hell to be like. A vacuous, soul destroying place where a deathly boring routine of sleep, eat, drink consistently gnaws at your bones, consuming every bit of wit & intellect you once had. Huge hotels line the sea front, where xanax is seemingly pumped through the air conditioning to zombify everyone from ever leaving these purgatory palaces. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
