On Selfies & Self-Portraits

04.09.13

To Ryder Street last night for the ‘Viva London: Self Portraits’ exhibition hosted by Harper’s Bazaar.  An intimate gallery of photographs, paintings and drawings, individually pictured the talented young women the agency represents in the most honest way.

[Olympia Campbell, Edie Campbell, Amber Atherton]

Self-portraiture as a style came to popularity in the Early Renaissance, with increased wealth and interest in the individual as a subject. The form seems more relevant than ever in our ‘Selfie’ culture, as we increasingly spend more time isolated on digital platforms we become our own subject for self-expression.  Frida Kahlo ( below) is most famous for her self-portraits, indeed of her 143 paintings, 55 are self-portraits which often incorporate symbolic portrayals of physical and psychological wounds. She insisted….

“I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.”

Last night I wore this lovely Peter Jensen dress, his s’s13 collection was shown in a gallery and in a extract from Interview magazine he weighs in on the relationship between fashion and art….  ‘I always think it’s pretentious when designers talk about what they do as art. I think when I was studying in the late ’90s, the two got much closer: all the designers wanted to be artists and the artists wanted to be fashion designers; the designers wanted to be conceptual and highbrow and the artists more pop culture.‘

5 Things You Should Do Right Now

01.09.13

Fill your September with Fitzgerald and superlatives! Yes It’s September and that means 4 more months left of 2013. As Autumn kicks in, why not reflect on what you want to achieve for the rest of the year. What are you going to do now, tomorrow,  to make you look back on 2013 and think, yes that was a great year?

1. Buy New Stationary!

Get It Done Zebra Notepad

Even if you’re not going back to school, there’s nothing quite like new pens and paper. I’m rather fond of these notepads from Rifle Paper Co, available at Liberty’s.

2. Watch Breaking Bad

Not just because it’s the best TV show out there right now- great script, amazing actors- but because it’s also got a surprising amount of relevant wisdom for entrepreneurs. From following your passion and believing in your vision, to hiring loyal and intelligent workers. Click to read the full article on 4 Startup Lessons From ‘Breaking Bad’

3. Read Drunk Tank Pink

This psychology book looks at how our decisions are influenced on a subconscious level. From proof that you are more creative when exposed to the Apple rather than the IBM logo, to the power of nominative determinism in charity ( more people whose name began with K donated money to Hurricane Katrina than any other letter) this is a thought provoking read.

4. Buy a new piece of jewellery to start the new season, from  MYFLASHTRASH.COM!

We’ve just launched another super talented jewellery designer at Flash Trash, Laura Gravestock. Rosie Fortescue introduced me to Laura, who designs and hand makes everything in London- her delicate heart rings are quickly becoming a hot fashion favourite.

5.  Check out my friend Whinnie Williams SUPER amazing new song!!

….and spot those @FLASHTRASHGIRL rings!

Don’t fear failure, just change your definition of it. #amberattitudes

The Hot New Handbag Brand You Need to Know

24.08.13

photo 1-1

I’ve been in Korea for a week now working on the FLASH TRASH own brand jewellery line. In between assembling samples and seeing suppliers, I’ve been trend-hunting around all the night malls and super cool concept stores for inspiration!

One evening I went off to explore Cheong Dam Dong, an up market shopping district popular with wealthy trend-setting Koreans. After spotting a particularly fashionable pair of girls I did what every fashion hungry lost foreigner would do- I followed them..down an empty side street! However before I could get very far with my fashion stalking, a bright red handbag caught my eye.  I wandered over to the window where the bag was framed in the ubiquitous concrete fashion store structure, and walked in to discover Couronne.

Couronne is a Korean luxury leather brand selling exquisite bags, shoes and other cute accessories. Owned by the Korean manufacturing giant Kolon (interesting company distributing everything from major fashion and lifestyle brands to chemicals)  the brand has over 60 stores in Korea, however only now is it being picked up in the west, with bags spotted around the arms of popular fashion bloggers and celebrities such as Jessica Alba.

Versatile, playful,  with a hint of urban utility, I love the use of colour in their iconic Stephanie bag.  I couldn’t resist leaving without something, so I picked up this amazing black leather tote (below) that doubles up as a chic back pack. Perfect for weekday meetings and hand luggage! I’m excited to see what this brand does next…
