5 Great Reads to Inspire You This 2014

31.12.13

I’ve always believed that Christmas is the only time of year you can really switch off. People all over the world are genuinely not at work, that red Blackberry light isn’t flashing and you’re not rushing to and from meetings. Whilst I’ll be watching myflashtrash.com like a hawk, this is one of the few times in the year that, wherever you are in your career, you’re free of the micro day to day tasks giving you the time to really think macro. Where is your business going in 2014? What are you own personal goals? Write down your plans and let the sky be the limit. With determination and a to-do list nothing is impossible. So in between the turkey and the wrapping paper, why not use the holidays as a time to get off your laptop and into a thought provoking book? Here’s my top eight reads to get you inspired for 2014.

1. The Everything Store – Winner of the 2013 FT & Goldman Sachs Business Book Of The Year Award- this definitive biography by Brad Stone charts the birth and rise of Amazon.com

2. The Greatness Guide – Robin Sharma of The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari fame, packs another powerful motivational punch with this clever little hand book. Split into short chapters (lessons) you’ll be revved up with inspiration before you know it.

3. Nassim Nicholas Taleb – an author, trader and mathematics professor examines what randomness means in business and life and the role of dumb luck in most human success.
4. Man’s Search For Meaning – A physcatricst’s account of surviving the Holocaust. Deeply moving and insightful, a powerful book that sheds light on a human’s true strength of character and ability to survive through the most challenging of struggles. One to sense check the reality of your issues and drive you forward.
5. Thinking Fast & Slow – This cult book will challenge you to disrupt the way you think. Giving you practical techniques to make better decisions, full of self-help value and intellectual surprises. A must read.
6. The Happiness Hypothesis – What will really make you happy in 2014? Love, money, success? Psychologist Jonathan Haidt challenges the norms.

7. The Meaning of Things – I’m always challenging my team to be more observational because the unconsidered life, as Socrates put it, is not worth living. AC Grayling’s books are always enlightening and this one, in particular, is an invaluable lesson about what’s truly important in life.

8. The Social Animal –  I believe deeply in the will power of the unconscious mind and this best-seller delves into the curious power of the mind and our ability to dictate our own success.

2 years after our first pop up shop back in October 2011, at Shoreditch House, BT2 becomes our third treasure box concession in a store. Flash Trash was the first online retailer to launch an instore concession in the UK at Oxygen Boutique where we used I-Touch’s locked on instagram to generate instore discounts for people who grammed and shared. Our popular presence in The W Hotel in London, earmarked the launch of Flash Trash in Shoreditch over at go-to boutique, 11 Boundary. We’ve got many more Treasure Boxes planned for the next 6 months, fancy one in a town near you ? Drop Jenni an email and tell us why and your city might be next! jennifer@myflashtrash.com

Martini Celebrates 150 years!

20.09.13

To Lake Como this week for the 150th Anniversary Party of iconic drinks brand MARTINI. Hopping on the plane with RedCarpetFashionAward’s Catherine and Nik Thaker, we got talking about the art of packing- now I’d like to say I neatly packed a small LV holdall the night before, but in reality it was an early morning dash to City Airport as I threw in some Terry De Havilands, Florence Bridge Dresses, Olivia Von Halle PJs, a stack of new Flash Trash Girl rings and grabbed Thinking Fast & Slow on the way out the door.

Arriving into Milan in the madness of Fashion Week, we collided with Mark Ronson and co in the airport before we all set off to the hotel. A quick check in to The Boscolo and we were out to Trussardi Cafe for Lunch which turned into wine and deep discussions on social media traffic, engagement and brand awareness which promptly left 30 minutes to get ready. A few work emails and a skype call was balanced with some speedy application of NARS tinted moisturiser and this amazing new Lancome Eye Palette before we drove off to Villa D’Este, where the international party Martini had prepared was like the most glam thing EVER.  A huge red carpet led us to the illuminated villa, with Martini racing cars lined up outside and waiters with huge goblets of Martini Royale waiting for us. Inside and the global mesh of the drinking world elite were in full partying swing, delicious canapés floated around , and as we dived into the decadence , Fitzgerald was on my mind…

“And I like large parties. They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.”- The Great Gatsby

Rosie arrived looking killer in a red dress with uber publicist Liz Matthews by her side mega babing in a Stella skirt. As we chatted dachsunds and jewellery in the corner, Lily Allen took to the stage performing 3 pitch perfect songs in her signature London style and just being her incredibly charming, funny self.  Mark Ronson then took to the decks, and our little Brit enclave went wild, dancing all night to a perfect mash up of hip-hop & electro pop. It was literally The Business International as representatives from almost every country in the world came down to get their chic on.

Only the most glamorous Italian drink, could have thrown such a blow out party. Thank you Martini for a hedonistic night of adventure. Now it’s back to all things Mashable & @MYFLASHTRASH as we hit #LONDONFASHIONWEEKEND got your tickets?
